Dr. Ujjal Poddar is presently serving as Professor and Head of the Department of Pediatric Gastroenterology at Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow. Dr Poddar has graduated from North Bengal Medical College, West Bengal and received his post-graduate (MD) degree as well as doctorate in Gastroenterology (DM) from Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, India.
Dr. Poddar's main contributions include - helping in establishing independent super-specialty department of Pediatric Gastroenterology, for the first time in India and also to start super-specialty course (DM) in Pediatric Gastroenterology, for the first time in the country, actively involved in awareness campaign about celiac disease in north India and neonatal cholestasis across India. He is the author of more than 170 publications, including original papers, reviews, and book chapters. His main research interest has been in the areas of celiac disease, portal hypertension, viral hepatitis B, neonatal cholestasis and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). He is the section editor (Gastroenterology) of Indian Pediatrics, the official journal of Indian Academy of Pediatrics.
Dr Poddar received several National and International Awards including Pfizer Gold Medal for standing first in final MBBS of University of North Bengal 1986, V Balagopal Raju Gold Medal for best scientific paper Pedicon, 1994, Young Investigator fellowship of European school of Oncology, Turin, Italy, 1998, Visiting fellowship of the Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health, London, 1999, 'Young Clinician Award' from Asia Pacific Digestive Week at Hong Kong, 2000, Clinician from developing country Award for Asia Pacific Digestive Week, Sydney, Australia, 2001, prestigious Olympus Mitra Endoscopy Award" by Indian Society of Gastroenterology in 2010, Presidential Poster of Distinction, American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), 2010.
He is an active member of several International and National medical organizations, including European Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN), Indian Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ISPGHAN), Indian Academy of Pediatrics, Indian Association for study of the liver (INASL), Indian Society of Gastroenterology (ISG), Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy of India (SGEI), etc.
